Process Art

Painted Feet.jpg

At Growing Little Loves we believe every child is an artist. We value process art and believe in each child's inherent ability to know what to do with art materials.

Process art celebrates the freedom to create, explore, and wonder—often in unexpected ways. Open-ended by nature, there’s no right or wrong way to engage with materials, making each experience unique. Through process art, children learn to trust themselves, follow their interests, and build confidence. This type of creative exploration encourages observational skills, intentional thinking, problem-solving, risk-taking, and personal growth.

Process art embraces play, curiosity, and discovery, offering joy in experimenting with materials. Imperfections aren’t just okay—they make artwork more interesting! Mistakes become opportunities for learning, showing children that creativity is about exploration, not perfection.

This approach is developmentally appropriate for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers (and even older kids!) because it gives children the power to make their own choices—something they don’t often get in their day-to-day lives.

"Toddlers won't always use the art materials the way you think they should be used but that's okay! Encourage exploration of materials and offer them over and over again. Repetition, as with many things at this age, builds skills and confidence in children."

Play IS learning.
